‘Compromise’ on the FISA Bill is Another Disaster for ‘Roll-Over-and-Play-Dead’ Democrats

You know, I wonder if the Republicans in the House or Senate have some scandalous photos of Nancy Pelosi having sex with a goat that they are threatening to reveal in order to end her career? Maybe they have tape of Steny Hoyer and Harry Reid sharing a ‘fuzzy navel’ at some gay bar somewhere.

I mean, it must be one of these things right?

Only this can explain why the Democrats in Congress are so willing to roll over and take continual kicks to the stomach and the ass from a lame-duck President, and a Republican minority in Congress, whom by all accounts, should get their head handed to them in the next election.

The so-called compromise on the FISA bill, which was finalized last Friday and can be viewed here…is nothing short of total capitulation, to borrow a phrase from Russ Feingold, by a Democratic majority that seems content on giving this administration any sort of nonsense legislation it wants. The FISA bill by all accounts, will have catastrophic effects on our civil liberties and economic well being, for years. The true depth of the damage is almost too colossal to comprehend.

I’d like to underscore the fact that in 2006, when the Congress was controlled by the likes of Bill Frist and Denny Hastert, the Bush administration tried to get a bill passed legalizing warrantless eavesdropping and amnesty for telecoms – that effort failed in a Republican controlled Congress. They had to wait until the Congress was controlled by Steny Hoyer, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and a slew of spineless Democrats of similar ilk, to accomplish that astounding feat.

I guess I’m a bit perplexed as to how this qualifies as a compromise at all? It seems odd how this “compromise,” smells just like all of the other ‘nod-nod-wink-wink’ passages of Iraq war funding, and the Military Commissions Act, and the Protect America Act, and every other “compromise” in which the Democrats engage. In the end, it seems more like forced anal rape of the constitution than anything else.

And the Democrats keep rolling along…

One can’t help but wonder who the Democrats are really working for. Nancy Pelosi removed herself entirely from the debate process on the bill, while Barack Obama, Harry Reid and others, have promised to do little or nothing to stop this administration from shredding our civil rights – and once again they prove me right.

They aren’t willing to fight like Republicans fight.

Here is what Senator Russ Feingold had to say:

The proposed FISA deal is not a compromise; it is a capitulation. . . . The House and Senate should not be taking up this bill, which effectively guarantees immunity for telecom companies alleged to have participated in the President’s illegal program, and which fails to protect the privacy of law-abiding Americans at home.

Allowing courts to review the question of immunity is meaningless when the same legislation essentially requires the court to grant immunity. Nacy Pelosi says, she “could argue it either way.”

Huh?

What is even more disgusting, is that the House leadership unveiled this bill for the first time today, and a vote on it for tomorrow. No hearings. Nothing. Let’s just run the old girl through. Many legislators won’t have nearly enough time to even read it. It reminds me of the days when Democrats used to complain when Republicans were in control, and how they were only given 24 hours to read many key bills before voting on them.

Hmmm….

Of course I’m sure that their votes tomorrow will be the by-product of a intense process of reading, reviewing and thoughtfully considering all of the finer points of this legislation before a vote is cast that will work to erode our civil liberties.

Democratic voters in this country need to wake up.

Nancy Pelosi hasn’t led the charge to fight Bush or the Republicans on anything. She is intent on sitting around and whimsically pontificating that she isn’t interested in debating things that don’t matter using phrases to describe the FISA bill like, ” …it’s all just six of one, half dozen of the other.”

When will this nonsense end?

  2. Matt, you and I have been taking about the gutless Democrat leadership for some time now and this takes the cake.

I am very disappointed that Obama like EVERY politician ended up making a political decision on this. It’s not his fault the GI Bill and the extended unemployment benefits were added on but you still don’t do a trade off with our constitutional rights.

I do have some hope Obama will make good on this when he becomes President.

  3. MJ,

Someone needs to step up on the Democratic side and put an end to these tactics. The Republicans are already grilling them on conservative talk radio, talking about how the Dems capitulated…and they certainly did. I say, grow a damn backbone already. What are they afraid of?

  4. They are doing what was so successful for George Bush… Pandering to the ignorant which is the lowest common denominator of the voting public.

Last year Obama said he would filibuster such a bill. What happened? Now he supports the ‘compromise’. Huh? A compromise of the fourth amendment? If he doesn’t have the backbone to defend the constitution, I’m going to have to re-think my support. Doesn’t he realize that the Republicans will point this out as a typical Democratic roll-over and play dead flip-flop? Talk is easy. The best measure is what someone does when the going gets tough. He will disappoint a lot of supporters if he votes yes.

  6. K.E. Cole,

My thoughts exactly. If this isn’t ‘all show and no go’ by Obama, I’m not sure what is. Your comment is spot on. Visit more often.
